Lung Function Tests Flashcards
Define Vital Capacity
Volume of air expired from the lungs from a maximal inspiration using a slow/relaxed manoeuvre
Define FVC
Forced Vital Capacity
Volume of air that can be forcibly expelled from the lungs from a position of maximal inspiration
Define Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1)
Volume of air forcibly expelled from the lungs in the first second- following a maximal inspiration
Define FEV1/FVC
Volume of air forcibly expired in the first second as a percentage of the total volume exhaled
What is the difference between spirometry in an obstructive and restrictive pattern?
Obstructive will reach normal volume and FEV1 greatly reduced
Restrictive will not reach normal volume but will have a near normal FEV1
