Lung Cancer part 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What are pros and cons of nicotine patch, gum, etc.?
A
- reduces chances of lung cancer
- does not reduce risk of ischemic heart disease
2
Q
What are the types of primary lung cancer?
A
- Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) 80% are this
- Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) 20% are this type
3
Q
What are the types of Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)?
A
- squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
- adenocarcinoma
- large cell
4
Q
- 25-30% of all lung cancers
- slow growing tumors in central part of lung (epidermal growth factor)
- most often associated with hypercalcemia
- detectable with cytologic studies and visible on x-ray
A
squamous cell carcinoma which is a (NSCLC)
5
Q
- 35-40% of all lung cancers
- often peripheral location in lung
- most common subtype in non-smokers
- moderate growth rate and does NOT respond well to chemo
- has its own subtype
A
adenocarcinoma which is a (NSCLC)
-subtype is bronchoalveolar: produces voluminous watery sputum
6
Q
- 10-15% of all lung cancers
- manifestations as large peripheral mass on radiography
- rapid growth that is highly metastatic
A
Large-cell carcinoma which is a (NSCLC)
7
Q
- 20% of lung cancers
- highly metastatic frequently to brain
- very raid growth
- chemo does not help
- radiation of palliative measures
A
small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
8
Q
How do lung cancer tumors progress and grow?
A
- by amplification of oncogenes
- RAS family have important abnormalities
- mutation of RAS NOT seen in non-smokers
9
Q
What are the diagnostic studies for lung cancer?
A
- chest x-ray: 1st test
- CT: extend of involvement and lymph enlargement
- MRI
- PET: cancer eats the glucose and lights up. No IVF with dextrose for 8-24hr before
10
Q
What IVF needs to be stopped for 8-24 hr before a PET scan.
A
no IVF with dextrose
