Squamous cell carcinoma
- most common
- occurs in central bronchi
- within tissue that line air passages on lungs
- strongly associated w smoking
Adenocarcinoma
- least malignant
- lung tumor volume doubling time of 180 days, slow growing
Small cell carcinoma
- most malignant type
- occurs in main bronchi
wide spread metastasis early on
Alveolar cell carcinoma
very rare
single or multiple carcinomas
originate in the cell lining of the alveoli
unresponsive to chemo
Horner’s syndrome
cancer at the top of the lung affect autonomic sympathetic nerves which can cause drooping of the eye lids, shrunken, dry eyes
Superior vena cava obstruction
Swollen head and arms because it drains these places
Phrenic nerve palsy ( C 3, 4 , 6)
Diaphragm is paralysed
Dysphagia
squeezes oesophagus, difficulty swallowing
Pericardial effusion
abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial space
Left laryngeal nerve palsy
hoarseness of voice, nreathy voice
Cushing’s syndrome
tumors produce excess steriod such as cortisol
Clubbing
bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis not copd
