s/s
cough, bloody/rusty sputum, pleuritic chest pain, weight loss, clubbing, dyspnea/wheezing, cyanosis
how is lung cancer dx’d
chest x-ray, biopsy of tumor or fluid from thoracentesis to confirm
first chamber of chest tube
collects drainage
second chamber of chest tube
water seal
some bubbling & tidaling is normal, lot of bubbling is bad
what does excess bubbling in 2nd chamber mean
air leak
purpose of chest tube in upper lung
drain air
purpose of chest tube in lower lung

nursing interventions for chest tube
check qhour, assess site for leakage/drainage & puffiness, keep system below pt’s chest
what to assess after chest tube removal
respiratory distress/failure - lung may collapse & they may need a new chest tube
why give morphine to a lung cancer pt?
helps w pain & dyspnea - decreases respiratory drive & helps anxiety
