s/s of invasive ductal carcinoma
lump w irregular edges, skin dimpling/peau d’orange,
s/s of inflammatory
erythema, edema, peau d’orange, breast pain, itching, and tenderness, breast enlargement
nonmodifiable risk factors
age, fam history, early menarche & late menopause - prolonged estrogen exposure
modifiable risk factors
postmenopausal obesity, physical activity, birth control, hormone replacement, alcohol, not breast feeding
age to start yearly mammograms
average risk women 40-45
high risk - 30, or 10 years younger than age when family member got it
women at high risk
chest radiation, BRCA gene mutation, 1st degree family member w cancer or BRCA
day one care of mastectomy
ambulation - support arm first few times
exercises - flex & extend elbow, squeeze
regular diet
what to avoid on affected arm & why
BP cuff, blood draws, injections - trauma, infection risk - bad since lymph flow is affected
how to prevent lymphedema
keep a pillow under arm/elevate it
post op mastectomy exercises
hand wall climb, swing rope in a circle, raise both arms & bend side to side, squeeze shoulder blades together
post op pt teaching
exercises, incision care, elevate affected arm & avoid trauma to arm
s/s of lymphedema
swelling, feels heavy or ache-y, paresthesia
tx of lymphedema
elevate w compression sleeve/glove
