What is an example of abnormalities of the overlying skin?
Peau d’orange
What 10 :( things do you feel for on palpation?
Surface Shape Size Tenderness Temperature Cough impulse? Consistency Compressible? Fluctuant? Pulsatile or expansile?
What terms can you use to describe the surface of a lump?
Smooth
Rough
Irregular?
What is cough impulse?
If it expands on coughing it is a hernia
What terms can you use when describing consistency?
Soft Firm Hard Rubbery Uniform Varied Lobulated
What should you do in terms of movement?
Skin tethering
Tethering to deeper structures
Tethering to muscles and tendons
How do you assess skin tethering?
Attempt to pick up a fold of skin over the swelling
Compare to other side
What specific tests are there?
Transilumination (fluid)
Auscultation (bruit or bowel sounds)
