Q

MP and function has been shown in the research to be successful with the Tx of LBP by:

A
  • Decrease pain
  • Improve function and activity tolerance
  • Decrease work-related disability
  • Prevent recurrence of LBP
  • Improve function Post microdiscectomy

Q

IAP - Stability of Joints

A

Box/Can Concept
* Diaphram is the roof
* Mutifidus and Transverse Abdominis are walls
* Pelvic floor is the floor

When generating pressure within the abdominal cavity it supports the spine

Q

How does the pressure in the abdomen change with breathing?

A

Breath in: Diaphram contracts down and expands. AC, PC, PF come out.
Breath out: Diaphram relaxes, AC comes in and PC and PF come up and contract

Q

What muscles tend to be tight and which are inhibited?

A
  • Postural Examples: QL, erector spinae, hamstrings, hip flexors, TFL, piriformis, rectus femoris, upper trap, scalenes, biceps
  • Phasic muscles: abdominals, glut med/max, quads, soleus

Q

What are some qualifications for a stabilization exercise to be effective?

A
  • Age less than 40
  • Positive prone instability
  • Prescence of aberrant motion with AROM (Gower;s sign, instability catch, reversed lumbopelvic rhythm
  • Greater than 91 degrees on SLR
  • Hypermobile patients: so mobile they rely on ligaments and bones rather than muscel resulting in ligaments getting stretched out over time

Q

Traction

A
  • No benefits to non-radicular pain
  • Short term benefits of intermittment traction for patient with radicular Sx’s with: peripherlization with extension and/or + Well leg raise (SLR and get Sx on opposite leg)

Aquatic Therapy and BW

A
  • Unloads the spine but is also active (therefore better than traction)
