Lumbar HVLA Flashcards
What is HVLA?
‘Thrust techniques’ are a collection of direct method manipulative treatments that use High-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) activation to move a joint that is exhibiting somatic dysfunction through its restrictive barrier so that when the joint resets itself, appropriate physiologic motion is restored.”
What causes the articular pop?
-no one really knows
Does the pop actually mean anything?
-no pop can happen or not and still be successful
what are some precautions and contraindications with HVLA?
- Vertebral basilar thrombosis
- Dens dislocation due to laxity in transverse ligament in people with RA and Conginital deformities
- pathologic fractures in metastatic or osteoporotic bone
- excessive force
What are potential benefits of HVLA?
–Pain reduction
–Improved freedom of motion
–Improved biomechanical funct5ion
–Reduction of somatovisceral reflex
Is HVLA direct?
yes
What is the mechanism of joint restriction?
-muscles maintain joint restriction (abnormal muscle activity)
What is the mechanism behind the thrust technique?
- Affects the mechanoreceptor of the joint capsule which alters the afferent output
- results in a release in muscle hypertonicity
What must be done in order to complete this direct technique?
the barrier must be engaged
