LTM Deficiencies/ Improving Memory Flashcards
What is intact implicit printing?
Perceptual priming-
Given a list of words,
Word identification under fast exposure,
Worse explicit memory for prime list words
What is stem completion?
Fill in the blanks to form a word,
Worse on free recall and recognition memory tasks
How can you measure procedural memory?
Pursuit rotor task or mirror writing task
What is mirror writing tasks?
Participant draws between lines until navigated around the shape
What did Butlers 1984 find?
Identical temporal gradient for semantic and episodic memory, rely on eachother
What did Kan, Alexander and Verfaellie 2009 do?
Amnesiacs given series of pictures of products and prices, needs to match the price with the product.
Intact areas- better performance
Damaged- no effect of consistency
semantic knowledge supports acquisition of bee episodic info
What is explicit memory tested by?
Recall tests- must reproduce info with limited/no influence from external cues,
Recognition task- items presented to a person who much determine if they were previously encountered,
Free recall- reproduce info without external cues.
How does alcohol help memories?
When consumed shortly after learning,
Inhibits formation of new memories that may interfere with consolidation process for learned info.
What is the method of loci?
Memory technique, associates items to be learned with familiar locations.
Potential proactive interference when using same locations.
What is the peg word system?
Relies on visual imagery, each leg word rhymes with a number.
When learned associated with other words to be learned.
