LT2 Minnesota Expt Flashcards
Why did the Mediterranean diet become popular?
Research into links between dietary saturated fat and CVD
What was the aim of the Minnesota Expt?
Characterise physical and metal effects of stavation on healthy men
By observing them under normal, starvation and re-feeding conditions
What measurements were taken?
Body mass
Muscle strength
Bone density
Ogan size (by x-ray)
Cardio-respiratory function
Exercise tolerance
Mood and psychometric tests
What were the re-feeding diets split into?
4 groups of high to low calori diets
Each split into subgroups
Placebo
Hi protein
Hi vitamin
Combinations
When re-feeding enough food must be supplied for what?
Allow tissues destroyed during stavation to be rebuilt
What is important in a rehabilitation diet?
Calories need to be abundant
Unless calories are abundant, then extra proteins, vitamins, and minerals are of little value
Why did they initially lose weight during rehab?
A result of losing the excess edema fluidin their bodies
What happened to many after long-term recovery?
Many reported eating excessively after they left Minnesota
Put on weight because felt like there was a cavity that needed filling
What is the problem?
Malnutrition
Focus of re-feeding on restory body weight, growth and positive N balance
Recovery is highly individual
Weight gain tends to be fat (lean body mass(protein) lags bt is required for health)
