LS8 - Early Attachments On Adult Relationships Flashcards
Monotropy
One special emotional bond that all infants have (usually with their mother).
Why’s Monotropy Important?
The infants uses this to create an internal working model - secure relationships lead to a positive working model.
Positive Working Model
All future relationships will be secure.
Contuinity Hypothesis
Individuals with secure childhood relationships will lead to have a positive internal working model.
Early Attachment Study Aim
Hazan & Shaver - To test the connection between a person’s internal working model and their adult attachment style.
Early Attachment Study Procedure
Hazan & Shaver - They played a love quiz in an American newspaper, asking questions about their relationships with their parents and attitude towards love with their current relationships.
Early Attachment Study Findings
Hazan & Shaver - 56% Secure
25% Insecure-Avoidant
19% Insecure-Resistant
Infant attachment styles were the same as adult attachment styles.
There was a positive correlation between adult attachment style and love experiences.
Early Attachment Evaluation
Hazan And Shaver:
Unreliable
Cause And Effect
Flawed Memories
Unreliable Early Attachment (-)
Other studies have failed to find the same correlation between attachments styles during infancy and adulthood.
Cause And Effect Early Attachment (-)
The study is correlational and therefore the cause and effect between infancy and adult attachment styles can’t be determined.
Flawed Memories Early Attachment (-)
The study relies on participant’s memories over their childhood which is likely to be flawed.
Monotropic Theory Disadvantages
Multiple Attachment Evidence
Socially Sensitive
Adopted Children Study
Multiple Attachment Evidence
Schaffer & Emerson - 13% of infants have only one attachment, suggesting multiple attachments form during childhood.
Socially Sensitive (-)
Feminists suggest it places a terrible burden on mothers as they’ll take the blame for anything and it underestimates the role of the father.
Adopted Children Study (-)
Tizzard & Hodges - Found children adopted after the age of 4 could still form attachments to their adopted parents despite not having a positive internal working model.
