LS8 - Duck's Phase Model Flashcards
Ducky Boy
Suggested that are 4 stages in relationship breakdown.
The 4 Stages In Relationship Breakdown
- Intra-Psychic Processes
- Dyadic Processes
- Social Processes
- Grave Dressing Processes
Intra-Psychic Processes
The dissatisfied partner privately sulks over the problems they’ve found, focus on their partner’s faults and feel as if they’re under-benefitting, leading to withdrawal.
Dyadic Processes
The dissatisfied partners privately tells their partners their problems and they both think about investments. There could be reconciliation if problems are accepted and tried to change and therapy could help at this stage.
Social Processes
A break up is made public making it harder to ignore, outside advice is given. This is more likely in younger people as they’re testing the market whereas older people experience breakdown less frequently.
Grave Dressing Processes
There’s the need to mourn and justify actions, partners publicise accounts of how it broke down, so they can maintain their social credit.

Improved Over Time (+)
Originally devised in 1952 but a new resurrection phase was introduced in 2006.
Resurrection Phase
Where the person self grows and gets ready for the next romantic relationship.
Social Exchange Theory (+)
Supports the phase model and suggests high costs and low rewards would result in a relationship breaking down.
Who Broke Up With Who (-)
Alzert - Found the role people had in deciding relationship breakdown was vital. He found those who didn’t initiate it were miserable and lonely whereas the ender was less upset but more guilty.
Ignores Gender Differences (-)
Females emphasise unhappiness, lack of emotional support and incompatibility as reasons for relationship breakdown whereas males think lack of sex/fun.
Overly Simplistic (-)
It reduces complex breakdowns to a four chronological stages, this seems unrealistic, as it’s unpredictable and ignores the prospect of a make-up.
