Self-Disclosure
Revealing personal information e.g. thoughts, feelings and experiences.
Social Penetration Theory
By revealing emotions and experiences, they gain a greater understanding of each other and hence attraction and trust increases. However too quick can reduce attraction
Reciprocal Self-Disclosure
Where someone tells you their secrets after you tell them yours, people cat for this these days.

First Date Research (+)
Altman & Taylor - Found self-disclosure on the first date is inappropriate and the person became less attractive.
Gradual Disclosure Support(+)
Tal-Or - Found self disclosure is gradual. In reality TV e.g. Big Brother, he found contestants who self-disclosed early on weren’t liked and gradual SD was preferred.
Cross Cultural Application (+)
Kito - Japanese & American studies all and self-disclosure in their relationships showing cultural validity.
Quality>Quantity (-)
Sprecher - The level as opposed to the amount of self-disclosure is important which goes against reciprocal self-disclosure.
Unrealistic (-)
Although self-disclosure is important it’s unrealistic to say it’s the only element of attraction in a relationship.
