LS10 - Situational Explanations (In Prisons) Flashcards
Situational Explanations
Disagree that aggression is caused by individuals, it’s argued crowded conditions can cause aggression.
Deprivation Model
Aggression results from a member of environmental deprivation.
What Can People Be Deprived Of
Deprivation Of Security
Deprivation Of Autonomy
Deprivation Of Liberty
Deprivation Of Goods
Deprivation Of Heterosexual Relationships
Deprivations Of Autonomy
Prisoners have no power and few choices, leading to frustration/aggression.
Deprivation Of Liberty
No freedom they have to ask for permission for normal things e.g. shower
Deprivation Of Goods
Frustration of not being able to access simple things e.g. phones.
Deprivation Of Heterosexual Relationships
People feel less manly and the opportunity for homosexuality may make people nervous.
Deprivation Of Security
Fear of inmates can make people aggressive as a form of defence.
Siutational Factors
Cooke Et Al argued that situational factors also have to be considered e.g. overcrowding, heat & noise and job burnout.
Strengths (+)
Overcrowding Study
Practical Applications
Weaknesses (-)
High Security Vs Low Security Prisons
Little Link Between Violence & Aggression
Overcrowding Study (+)
Gaes Et Al found overcrowding can cause not just ill health and general misconduct but also can result in aggression.
Practical Application (+)
Wilson set up 2 conditions in HMP, one with reduced overcrowding noise and temp, and this condition successfully reduced aggression.
High Security Vs Low Security Prisons (-)
Camp and Gaes - 561 male inmates of similar backgrounds in high security vs low security prisons. In over 2 years there were no significant differences between the 2. Suggesting it’s due to dispositional explanations as opposed to situational explanations.
