What Is Deviation Of Social Norms
Any behaviour that doesn’t follow accepted social patterns/rules (abnormal behaviour, classed as unacceptable)
What Does DFSN look at?
impact of an individual’s behaviour upon other people and how desirable it is, (DFSN= abnormal and undesirable)
Rules In Soceity
Explicit = serious government laws- breaking could mean breaking the law Implicit= codes of conduct e.g dress code.
Purpose Of DFSN
Help identify person who might be suffering from a mental disorder
Strength Of Deviation From Social Norms
Distinguishes difference between desirable and non-desirable behaviour - protects members of the public from the damaging consequences of abnormal behaviour.
-Highlighting abnormal behaviour will minimise it and protect the public.
Disadvantages Of Deviation From Social Norms
Doesn’t always indicate the person has a psychological abnormality (odd/eccentric).
Context must be taken into account
Doesn’t always indicate the person has a psychological abnormality (-)
Definition does not always indicate a person has a psychological abnormality - may just be odd /eccentric -> psychologists must be cautious when deciding if someone is actually mentally disturbed (esp when by themselves)

Being naked might be abnormal in endz but not at a nudist beach, therefore context must be considered.
