LR- Liquid Radwaste Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Liquid Radwaste system?
Collects, processes, monitors, and recycles or disposes of liquid radwaste generated in the plant
Can also accommodate secondary plant demin resin chemical regenerates from the condensate demineralizers
What normally processes liquid radwaste of borated and tritiated reactor coolant quality water?
Boric Acid Concentrator
After the liquids are processed through the LR system, where are they sent to next?
To either the solid radwaste and radioactive filter handling system (SR/RF) for packaging and off-site shipment, recycled for eventual reuse in the plant or retained for further processing.
Are there any off-site release points from the LR system?
No
What sources of liquid are received by the LR system normally and abnormally?
normal:
Containment, Radwaste, Radwaste building, Auxiliary Building, Fuel building
Decontamination and laundry facility (Unit 1)
Radiochemistry labs (CM)
Solid Radwaste resin transfer/dewatering pump
abnormal:
Condensate polishing and blowdown demineralizer regenerant wasts
turbine building sumps
Aux Steam condensate receiver tank
Chem. Waste neutralizer tank
What provides power to the LR evaporator MCC? What powers various LR system pump motors, control panels and heat tracing?
NG
NH
What provides cooling to the Evaporator? Where is the LR Evaporator located?
Nuclear Cooling
120’ RW building
What are the five sub-systems of the LR system?
TDS
Evaporator
Concentrate Monitor
Recycle Monitor
Chemical Drain
What is the purpose of the LR Holdup tanks?
To allow collection of radioactive liquid waste
What is the capacity of the LR Holdup tanks? What are the high and low level setpoints? What protects the inside of the tank from deposition of solids?
Capacity of 31,400 gallons
Hi: 29,500 gallons
Lo: 1000 gallons
internal mixing header for good mixing and sparging of internal surfaces
What is the Hi-Hi level setpoint for the LR Holdup tanks?
30,000 gallons
What happens if any of the LR Holdup tanks lowers to 500 gallons (lo-lo level)?
All holdup pumps will trip and the evaporator feed valve, LV-202, will close
Where do the LR Holdup tanks vent to? Where are they located?
Radwaste Building ventilation exhaust header
south of radwaste building surrounded by concrete walls
Where is the LR Holdup tank overflow directed to?
They will overflow to each other prior to overflowing to the Radwaste building sump
What is the purpose of the LR Holdup Pumps? Where are they powered from? Where are they located?
To transfer waste from the TDS holdup tanks to the LR evaporator
NH
100’ radwaste building
Where are the controls for the LR Holdup Pumps? What trips these pumps?
Radwaste Control room
lo-lo level in any TDS holdup tank will trip all pumps
also have electrical protection
What is the purpose of the LR Caustic Tank? How is level measured? How is this tank filled and where does it over flow to?
Serves as a storage tank for the caustic (50 weight percent NaOH) used in the LR system
0-47” in a sight glass
truck fill connection on the south exterior wall of radwaste building
neutralizing bed on the 100’
What is the purpose of the LR caustic batch tank? capacity? What protections does this tank have?
Gravity filled from the Caustic storage tank, used to provide caustic to the TDS Holdup Tanks for pH adjustments
25 gallons
heat trace and 25kw heater
How does the Caustic get added to the LR TDS Holdup Tanks? Where are the caustic and caustic batch tanks located?
Via gravity flow from the batch tank
120’ radwaste building
What is the purpose of the LR Anti-Foaming Tank? What does it minimize?
Stores anti-foaming suppressants for addition to collected wastes, which contain detergents
bubbling and detergent foaming
What is the purpose of the LR Anti-Foam Metering Pump?
Delivers Anti-foaming storage tank contents to the LR evaporator package
can also align to the TDS tanks, but it is pointless because the anti-foam floats to the top and will never reach the evaporator
What is the capacity of the LR Anti-Foam Storage tank? How is this tank filled? Where are the anti-foam tank and pump located?
110 gallons
hand pumped from a tank and a hose into the storage tank
chemical addition room on the 120’ radwaste building
What kind of pump is the LR Anti-foam Metering pump and when will it trip?
54 gph positive displacement pump
Automatically trips when the anti-foam tank level decreases to 13” (44.7 gallons)
As long as the level remains low, the pump will not start
What is the purpose of the evaporator in the LR system?
Removes water from and increases the concentration of total solids in liquid waste, processed from the TDS tanks.
Concentrated liquid may not be reused like in the BAC due to undesirable contaminants
What is the purpose of the Vapor Body in the LR evaporator package? How are suspended and dissolved solids removed from the vapor prior to leaving the vapor body?
Serves as the primary separation chamber to release vapor from boiling liquid
Contains reflux trays and mesh pad moisture separators near the top to prevent carryover of entrained liquid, suspended solids and undesirable contaminants
reflux trays have fine mist spray nozzles that remove solids from the vapor and mesh pads remove the entrained moisture and contaminants
What is the purpose of the Surface Condenser in the LR evaporator package? Where are the non-condensable gases vent to?
Uses NC flowing through the condenser tubes to condense vaporized liquid waste that enters the shell side
radwaste building exhaust via the vent cooler
What is the purpose of the Reboiler in the LR evaporator package? How does it work?
Improves distillate quality by removing volatile impurities via reheating it
a gas stripping column with perforated plates and a reboiler scrub the distillate as it falls through distillate vaper produced inside the column. distillate gathers in a Seal Pot at the bottom
What is the heat source for the Reboiler in the LR evaporator package?
Auxiliary Steam
What is the purpose of the Distillate cooler in the LR evaporator package?
To cool the evaporator distillate to a temperature below the design temperature of the LR system Adsorption Bed and Mixed-Bed Ion Exchanger resins
