  • lipid-soluble compounds used in pharmacy
  • Anti-androgen if, anti-inflammatory, endocrine agent, spasmolytic, anti-spasmodic
  • Well supported use in BPH. Empirically supported use in male pattern baldness, chronic prostatitis, urethral spasm, prostate cancer, underweight depleted persons with poor appetite.
  • Action is through the inhibition in the intraprostatic conversion of testosterone to DHT
  • Mild 5 alpha reductive inhibitor
  • Kings: relaxation with copious d/c, lack of development or wasting of sex organs – Reproduction.

  • Diuretic, urinary anti-microbial, carminative, antispasmodic, tussive
  • GU Conditions: as antimicrobial for chronic problems. As diuretic for edema. Atonic, chronic congestive states of the urinary system. Renal insufficiency WITHOUT inflammation. After nephritis to restore kidney function.
  • GI Conditions: carminative, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, bitter. Useful for stimulating appetite!

  • More helpful in the PREVENTION of UTIs. Great for women with recurrent UTIs
  • Decreases sx of chronic pyelonephritis

  • Proanthocyanidins with A-type linkages
  • Cautions: may enhance warfarin action

  • Principle action is on kidney to improve water excretion and remove congealed fluids and on lymph system to remove stagnant lymph and swollen glands
  • More alterative and lymph effects than uva ursi.. More gentle, can use for longer.
  • Chronic prostatitis and BPH

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

A
  • hydroquinone glycosides ARBUTIN is the active ingredient responsible for anti-microbial action
  • high in tannins: astringe tissues of bladder
  • Specific indications: relaxed urinary tract with pain or bloody or mucous secretions, weight and dragging in loins and perineum not due to prostatic enlargement. Chronic irritation of the bladder with pain and discharge
  • effective in ACIDIC URINE
  • Cautions: avoid in pregnancy, long term use, overdose of hydroquinone –> tinnitus, nausea, vomiting, suffocation, SOB
