- Action is through the inhibition in the intraprostatic conversion of testosterone to DHT
- Mild 5 alpha reductive inhibitor
- Kings: relaxation with copious d/c, lack of development or wasting of sex organs – Reproduction.

Q
Solidago spp.:
A
Goldenrod
- anti-cattarhal, antiinflam, anti-microbial, astringent, diaphoretic, carminative, square tic, urinary antiseptic
- Irrigation of the urinary tract, especially in case of inflammation and renal gravel, and as an adjuvant in bacterial infections of the urinary tract
10
Q
Equisetum arvense
A
Horsetail
- use infertile parts
- Hemostatic, diuretic, astringent, anti-inflam
- Specific indication: cystic irritation, tenesmic urging to urinate, nocturnal urinal incontinence, renal calculi.
- Repairs CT- collagen and elastin, bone, joint, muscles, veins. CT disorders!
11
Q
Zea mays
A
Corn Silk
- Energetics: sweet, cool, drying and moistening. Enters the urinary bladder, kidney, GB meridians
- Promotes urination, resolves toxicosis and drains fluid congestion, dissolves deposits and stones, and relieves irritation
- Demulcent, diuretic, anodyne
- Primary uses: UT inflammation, stones, edema, enuresis, prostatitis
- Best used FRESH

12
Q
Juniperus communis
A
Juniper
- small amount of volatile oil. Flavonoids, tannins, sugars.
- Diuretic, urinary anti-microbial, carminative, antispasmodic, tussive
- GU Conditions: as antimicrobial for chronic problems. As diuretic for edema. Atonic, chronic congestive states of the urinary system. Renal insufficiency WITHOUT inflammation. After nephritis to restore kidney function.
- GI Conditions: carminative, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, bitter. Useful for stimulating appetite!
13
Q
Vaccinium macrocarpon
A
Cranberry
- urinary antibacterial, antioxidant
- More helpful in the PREVENTION of UTIs. Great for women with recurrent UTIs
- Decreases sx of chronic pyelonephritis
- Small concentration of D-mannose, which is specific in inhibiting e-coli form adhering to the bladder wall
- Proanthocyanidins with A-type linkages
- Cautions: may enhance warfarin action
14
Q
Chimaphila umbellata
A
Pipsissewa
- Arbutin and tannins, though less than arctostaphylos
- Astringent, alterative, tonic, diuretic, antiseptic
- Principle action is on kidney to improve water excretion and remove congealed fluids and on lymph system to remove stagnant lymph and swollen glands
- More alterative and lymph effects than uva ursi.. More gentle, can use for longer.
- Chronic prostatitis and BPH
15
Q
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
A
- hydroquinone glycosides ARBUTIN is the active ingredient responsible for anti-microbial action
- high in tannins: astringe tissues of bladder
- Specific indications: relaxed urinary tract with pain or bloody or mucous secretions, weight and dragging in loins and perineum not due to prostatic enlargement. Chronic irritation of the bladder with pain and discharge
- effective in ACIDIC URINE
- Cautions: avoid in pregnancy, long term use, overdose of hydroquinone –> tinnitus, nausea, vomiting, suffocation, SOB
