Ask the patient if they have any pain including back pain

Inspection:
-Posture
-Wasting
-Tremor
-Fasciculations
-Involuntary movements

Assess the patient’s gait
(Do the 4 different types)

Romberg’s test

Tone:
Passively move each joint

Check for ankle clonus (UMN lesion)

Power
Hip: abduction, adduction, flexion and extension
Knee: flexion and extension
Ankle: dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, eversion, inversion
Big toe: plantarflexion and dorsiflexion
(Learn myotomes)

Reflexes
-knee
-ankle
-plantar reflex
-ankle clonus

Co-ordination
Heel-shin test

Sensation
Soft touch
Pain / pinprick (OSCE: describe only)
Temperature (OSCE: describe only)
Proprioception
Vibration sense (128Hz tuning fork)
Check the trunk for the sensory level if indicated.
