Lower Limb 2 Flashcards
Which bone forms the medial malleolus?
The tibia.
Which bone forms the lateral malleolus?
The fibula.
What is the action of the anterior compartment of the leg?
Dorsiflexion of the foot.
What type of joint is the proximal tibiofibular joint?
Synovial plane joint.
What type of joint is the distal tibiofibular joint?
Fibrous joint.
What holds the tibia and fibula together?
Interosseus membrane.
What are the muscles of the anterior compartment?
Tibialis anterior
Extensor digitorum longus
Extensor hallicus longus
Fibularis tertius.
What are the 4 main movements of the ankle?
Dorsiflexion
plantarflexion
inversion
eversion
What is the strongest dorsiflexor of the ankle?
Tibialis anterior
What are the two divisions of the sciatic nerve?
Tibial nerve
Common fibular nerve
What are the two divisions of the popliteal artery?
Anterior tibial artery
Posterior tibial artery
What is the division of the common fibular nerve? where does the division occur?
The deep fibular nerve.
The superficial fibular nerve.
Lateral side of head of fibula.
Which nerve innervates the anterior compartment of the leg?
Deep fibular nerve
What nerve innervates the lateral compartment of the leg?
The superficial fibular nerve.
Which artery runs with the deep fibular nerve?
Anterior tibial artery.
What are the muscles of the lateral compartment?
Fibularis longus, Fibularis brevis.
What is the action of the lateral compartment?
Eversion
assist with plantar flexion (but weak compared to posterior compartment).
What is the blood supply to the lateral compartment of the leg?
Perforating arteries from arteries nearby (doesn’t have its own unique supply).
Which nerve is damaged in foot drop?
The common fibular nerve.
Which side of the leg does the lesser saphenous vein descend on?
posterior aspect of the leg
Which side of the leg does the greater saphenous vein descend on?
the medial side.
Which artery does the dorsals pedis arise from?
The anterior tibial artery.
Where is the dorsalis pedis palpated?
In between the 1st and 2nd metatarsal bones.
Where is the popliteal pulse located?
Posterior to the medial malleolus.
What is the nerve supply of the dorsal of the foot?
Deep fibular nerve (carries on from anterior compartment).
What are the muscles on the dorsal side of the foot?
extensor digitorum brevis
extensor hallicus brevis
extensor digiti minimi
dorsal Interosseus
Where do the tendons of extensor hallicus brevis and extensor digitorum brevis insert to?
The tendons of the longus muscles (extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallicus longus).
