Lower GI Flashcards
What are the three levels of folding?
Plicae, crypt-villus system, and the microvilli
What does the small intestine consists of?
Duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
What does each villus contain?
A core of lamina propria
Where do crypts extend down to
Bases of villi
What do cells of the crypt include?
Goblet cells, enterocytes, panenth cells, and enteroendocrine cells
Where are glands of brunner found?
Duodenum and secrete mucous and bicarbonate ion
In the small intestine, highly eosinophophilic Paneth cells are located where?
Basal crypts and produce lysozyme to control intestinal flora
What are the characteristics of Villi of the duodenum?
Wide with spatulate or “leaflike” distal shape and deep crypts of Lieberkuhn with Brunner’s glands with excretory ducts in submucosa
What types of villi do jejumum and ileum have?
Longer and narrow (shorter in the ileum)
What are found in jejumum and ileium?
Crypts of Lieberkuhn present but there are no glands in the submucosa
What type of epithelium does the large intestine have?
Simple columnar with crypts but no villi
Where is most of the immune system found?
In the intestine and is often found in the form of aggregations of lymphoid tissue referred to as Peyer’s patches
Plasma cells located in the Peyer’s patches secrete what?
IgA or secretory IgA
