Lower extremities
The pelvis and hip joint may be considered part of the lower extremities
Femur
Large thigh bone; largest long bone in the body; slight bend at its proximal end where it attaches to the pelvis (where patient breaks hip)
Patella
Kneecap; Sits anterior to the knee joint; knee connects superiorly with the femur and inferiorly with the bones of the pore leg, the tibia and fibula
Tibia (shinbone)
The medial and larger bone of the lower leg
Fibula
The lateral and smaller bone of the lower leg
Ankle
Connects the tibia and fibula with the foot; 2 landmarks- malleoli at each side of the ankle and the lateral malleolus (lower end of the fibula) and the medial malleolus (lower end of the tibia)- the protrusions you see on the lateral and medial aspects of your ankles
