Low Pressure High Pressure Flashcards
Low pressure..Warm air does what?
1.Cools down as it rises
2.Leads to cloud formation and precipitation
3.Extreme unstable conditions
High pressure..descending cold air does what?
1.Heats up as it descends
2.little to none cloud formation
3.no precipitation
4.calm /stable weather conditions
Southern hemisphere will ?
Rotate clockwise into the centre of a low pressure system
What is a front ?
Separation of two air masses usually with different characteristics
-Because of these difference characteristics the air masses will not mix
Why a front(cold or warm )may lead to cloud formation and precipitation
Warm air rises and when warm air is advancing towards the cold air ,warm air is forced to override cold air leading to cloud formation and precipitation
Family of fronts
Three or four fronts that are connected (furthers east is the oldest because of the movement from west to east )
Tropical cyclone characteristics
1.intense low pressure system
2.develop between 5-20 degrees latitude
3.move westward (east to west )
4.driven by easterlies
5.heavy rainfall, storms and high wind speeds
Conditions needed for tropical cyclones to form
-high humidity…latent heat release during condensation
-stable calm weather conditions
-little surface friction
What causes the dissipation of mid-latitude cyclones
When all the warm air is been uplift far above the surfaces
How to reduce the negative impacts of cold fronts
Stay indoors
Avoid outdoor activities
Delay travelling
Stock up to food /water /medical supplies
