Anticyclones Flashcards
What is a cyclone depression
Cloud and thunderstorms with wind speeds less than 61 km/h
What is a tropical storm
Heavy wind speeds between 61-117km/h
Intense tropical weather
Systems with wind speeds 118km/h and higher
Characteristics of anitcyclones
-cold air that descends (high pressure)
-as sir decends it heats up adiabaitically
Dry winds forms because there’s no condensation taking place so no clouds will form
Forms part of subtropical high pressure belt
Line thunderstorms (summer )
-caused by large scale convergence along moisture front
-occurs when cold air from Atlantic ocean meets warm ,moist air from Indian Ocean
Destructive nature of line thunderstorms
Line thunderstorms associated with culinombus clouds that bring in heavy rainfall leading to floods that could destroy infrastructure ,human life ,destroy crops and vegetation.
Lightning could be present with cumlilonubus clouds are formed this could destroy farms, livestock and kill people .
Hail can also be present can can cause damage to crops ,infrastructure, injure people and kill human lives and livestock
Strong winds can kill people snd destroy infrastructure
What to do when yk a berg wind is coming
Have early warning systems
Have emergency contacts of firefighters on standby
Have fire extinguishers
Irrigate your crops do they are not dry
Have controlled fire
Have evacuation plans
Cancel outdoor activities
Berg winds (winter )
Warm dry offshore winds desendimg from higher lying areas
-interior of SA kalahari HP
As winds blow down the mountains/escarpment they will heat up adiabatically
-Leads to a rise in temp for coastal town
