What is the mind?
- mind is very different to body (Dualism)
- mind is complex example of the physical body (monism)
What is autism spectrum disorder?
-lifelong developmental disorder characterised by differences in social interaction, receptive routines, behaviours and interests
What is dualism?
- mind and body are separate
- prioritisation of thought over body
- rationalism (value of reason and thought over physical and emotional experience)
What is idealist monism?
mind and body are both just imagined ideas
What is materialist monism?
mind and body are both just material things
Arguments for materialism in philosophy of mind?
- mind is a computer program generated by mechanical computer, the hardware or wetware of brain
- computer sufficiently complex should be capable of thought
Arguments against materialism in philosophy of mind?
- ‘chinese room’ thought experiment
- computer manipulates symbols according to rule, does not generate meaning or mind
What is capgras syndome?
- delusion of doubles featuring a loss of affective response to familiar faces
- recognise people as we generate meanings associated with them
What is mirror agnosia?
- failure to acknowledge the existence of neglected side in hemineglect syndrome following presentation of a mirror
- generate subjective understanding of world
What is phenomenology?
construct the world based on our own subjective interpretation of external events
