- Immediately transmit mayday over the tactical channel
- Give incident commander information as to who they are how many firefighters need assistance, where they think they are, description of surroundings and nearby activities, or any other information that might direct rescue crews to their location. If possible, trapped firefighters should include the level of entrapment
- Activate the emergency button which will transfer you to the media channel which will not work in “talk about”.
- Press the emergency button which will transfer the radio to the Mayday channel while they continue to find their way out
- Manually activate PASS device on SCBA
- Attempt to get out of the building by whatever means possible

- Implement a RIT team , may initially use an IRIT
- Send RIT to most appropriate location. ( typically the last reported work area) . Initiate S&R efforts. Additional RIT’s should be assigned to protect rescue crews
- Have TRT dispatched at structural collapse us with trapped firefighters and consider staging for those additional units.
- Adjust fire grounds strategies to to prioritize the search and rescue effort
- Initiate a PAR
- Make sure that fire fighting positions are not abandoned and efforts should be concentrating on keeping the fire out of the rescue area and providing appropriate ventilation and Lighting
- Make sure that other firefighters don’t freelance and take higher risk and consider crowd control of nonessential firefighters
- Assign a safety officer to rescue operations
- Expand the incident command system to include a search and rescue branch
