Lords And Ladies Flashcards
Tell me about a lord
A Medieval Lord was very powerful.
He owned huge amounts of land and commanded many nights and soldiers.
The Lords duty was to maintain order in his hands, act as a judge and train soldiers.
In his leisure time he went hunting or hawking and held tournaments (events for nights) featuring Mock Battles and jousting contests.
Tell me about a lady
The lady of the castle usually married at a young age.
The ladies main duty was to bear children as heirs.
The family lived upstairs in the keep, near the chapel in a warm sunny room called a solar. Here, the lady would weave, teach the children or play music.
She also ran the households, instructing the servants supervising the storage and preparation of food and acting for her husband.
Medieval marriages
The woman usually married at a very young age.
In the mediaeval ages, marriages were arranged by two families, often to see an alliance. A dowry (sum of money or land) was paid to the groom by the lady.
