advantages

shows how views change over time
shows people’s experiences and what the influential factors on peoples lives are
disadvantages
sample attrition - due to high drop out rates - may cause the sample to lack representativeness
costly and time consuming
may develop emotional attachment - researcher bias
hawthorne effect/ demand characteristics possible
