Long Term Memory Flashcards
Episodic Memory
Life events, personal memory
Semantic memory
General memory, facts, knowledge; not tied to specific instance
Autobiographical memory
Mixes semantic and episodic
ex. First day of school and name of new friends
Declarative Long Term Memory
Episodic, Semantic, and Autobiographical memory
Non Declarative Long Term Memory
Unconscious memory, skills or habits, procedural, classical conditioning responses, priming
Difficult to explain
Ex. Describe riding a bicycle
What happens when hippocampus and other temporal lobe structures are removed?
Total anterograde amnesia, declarative/explicit memory gone completely, limited short term, implicit memory is still intact
Result - can learn to do complicated motor task but will deny ever learning it
Procedural memory
Skills learned without conscious input
Where is explicit memory located in the brain?
Semantic and episodic memory are located in the frontal and temporal lobes
Where is implicit memory located in the brain?
The basal ganglia, cerebellum, motor and non motor brain areas
Primacy effect
Recall of items at the beginning of the list (LTM)
Recency effect
Recall items at the end of the list (STM)
How long does it take to eliminate or delay the recency effect?
30 seconds to eliminate and 10 seconds to delay
Proactive Interference
Occurs when asked to learn a series of related items and the task is difficult due to old learning
Priming
Enhancement of the cognitive processing of information after a recent exposure to the same information
Korsakoff’s Syndrome
Severe declarative memory impairment due to chronic alcohol abuse
