Encoding, Retrieval, and Consolidation Flashcards
What are the types of rehearsal?
Maintenance and Elaborative
Maintenance Rehearsal
Maintain or rehearse information in a temporary, store for use in the immediate future
Elaborative Rehearsal
Change or add to existing information
Used to place information in LTM
Context/State Dependent Memory
Recall of information is best when state, mood, or location matches when the information was stored or learned
Encoding Specificity
Retrieval closely matches the conditions present during the original learning
Context vs State dependent
Context dependent - external, environmental factors
State dependent - internal, physiological factors
Mood Congruent Memory
Current mood causes selective or better encoding or retrieval that is congruent with the prevailing mood
Long term potentiation
Communication across the synapse between neurons strengthens the connection, making further communication easier
How does damage to the hippocampus affect LTP?
Damage result in poor or no learning; no long term potentiation
What is REM sleep associated with?
Brain and body arousal
Reconsolidation
Memory traces become vulnerable to disruption when they are recalled
Same effect as consolidations but does not necessarily occur with each memory we recall
It does occur with relatively newly consolidated material
