A
  • Germany divided into 2 at the end of the war to weaken the country and to divide the spoils between Us, Britain, Soviet Union and France.
  • Once these countries started fighting the country of Germany would be divided with a wall.

FATE OF JAPAN

A
  • Became occupied by the US forces until 1952.
  • By then the Japanese economy had recovered and a treaty was signed between US and Japan which ended the control of US forces in Japan but allowed the US to retain a base in Japan.

  • USSR and US emerged from war as superpowers.
  • This meant they were far more powerful than any other allied countries at this time.
  • Size of army, scientific advancements, wealth and strength were all factors.

  • Before the war, countries like France and Britain held many countries in their Empire.
  • However, after the war they were not strong enough to hold these countries under their control and soon a lot of these countries fought and gained their freedom.

  • The whole of Europe wanted one thing-peace.
  • They had been at war for most of the century and they wanted to heal and grow together.
  • This was the start of the idea of a European Union.

THE UNITED NATIONS(UN)

A
  • The LON was terrible and done little to prevent a World War.
  • This time they said they would do better.
  • An organisation called the United Nations was created to police the world and promote peace.
  • Many countries who hadn’t joined the LON did join the UN.
  • The UN is still in operation today.
