INVASION OF POLAND

A
  • This was Hitler’s final act before war.
  • On August 31st- members of the German SS dressed as Polish soldiers attacked a German Radio Station.
  • Hitler used this as an excuse to invade Poland.
  • Britain and France declare war 2 days later.

WINTER 1939-40

A
  • Known as the Phoney War.
  • No fighting took place
  • Germany. France and Britain began to prepare for war.

DUNKIRK

A
  • May 26th-June 6th
  • VERY famous and memorable moment of the war.
  • British soldiers pushed onto the beaches on the coast of France.
  • Hitler halted attacks which gave the British and French time to escape and recover.
  • Also gave them time to organise a mass evacuation off the beaches.
  • Not only was the event of Dunkirk extremely memorable but also the rescue of the soldiers on fishing boats and little row boats.
  • OPERATION DYNAMO- the plan to get the soldiers off the beaches.
  • British used the event to encourage more British people to join the fighting and become heros.

RESULTS OF DUNKIRK

A
  • Hitler was the victor.
  • Britain had rescued 300,000 soldiers but Hitler captured 1-2 million.
  • His army also took a lot of the allies equipment.
  • This meant that the allies were weakened and needed time to gain their strength back.
