Why was regeneration needed in the docks?

-post 16 college and technology college built
-120,000 jobs created
-unemployment fell from 14.2-7.4%
-8000 local authority homes were refurbished
Economic regeneration in the docks
-Isle of dogs enterprise encouraged private investment, 6x as much public money attracted
Criticisms of docklands
-failed to bring wealth to the local population, income per household in Canning Town was 25% less than Canary Wharf
-local resentment, top down approach locals had little say
-hi-tech jobs were unsuitable for traditional dock workers
