State the successes that the LoN had:

How far was the absence of the USA responsible for the failure of the League in the 1920’s?
Absence of USA responsible:
- Lack of economic and political assistance
- Army to impose sanctions, lack of USA’s military assistance
Other factors responsible:
- Britain and France - self interests
- Structure of LoN
- Council and Veto
- Expectations too high and differences of opinion
What happened in Vilna, 1920?
30% of Vilna’s population were polish and only 2% were actual Lithuanians. Poland took over Vilna and Lithuania asked the LoN to kick Poland out of Lithuania but Poland refused
What was the Corfu Crisis, 1923?
Mussolini ignores the leagues orders to pull out Corfu, and made Greece pay money to Italy
What was the Geneva Protocol, 1924?
Draft treaty to ensure collective security in Europe. The French enthusiastically supported the protocol, but it failed after it was rejected by the British.

- Successful:
- Helps Turkish refugees in 1922 after problems of treaty of sevres
- 400k returned to their homes
- Nansen passport to help refugees
- Failures:
- Doesn’t have enough money to continue work
- Under-Financed in the late 1920-1930s

- Successful:
- Limited working hours for children
- ILO
- Banned toxic work substances= White lead paint
- Prevented work related deaths and abolish forced labour= Tanganyika railway 50% to 4%
- Failures:
- Tried to introduce 4 to 8 hour week but some countries refused
- under-financed
