design
Lab
Participants : exp 1
Exp 1 - 36 students = uni of Washington
Aged 18-31
13 ps - psych students
23 ps - advert paid $3.50 credit
Participants in exp 2
80 student from Washington uni
Procedure
2 sets of 35mm slides
Each set - 18 slides
2 conditions - exp and control
In exp - person b pulled out a gun
In Control - person b pulled a Cheque
Each slide - 1.5 sec
Given 12 photos of people = rate them (1-6) for person b
Eye movement measured with EOG
How long were each slide for
1.5 sec
How many slides in a set
18
How many photos given and what are the rating scales
12 photos
1-6
Results
Ans to questions were not Sig diff in both groups
8.5% due to chance
In control = 39.8% (7) recognised person b
In exp = 11.1% (2) recognised person b
No diff in self report of confidence
Results - eye movement
In exp = 3.72 sec looking at gun
In Control = 2.44 sec looking at Cheque
What was concluded
Ps spent longer looking at the gun - also exp group found it harder to identify person b
Weapon focus would be a larger factor in real life, as witness will be more aroused = increase in attentional narrowing
Background; what are the variables that affect recall to recognise a face (4)
Delay - how long ago
Exposure mode - did u see face in diff context
Stimulus variables - how meaningful is the face
Subject variables - how good is your memory
