phase 1: detectives asked to record selection of interviews using standard technique.
- This took 4 months and 88 interviews
- divided into 2 groups
- trained for cognitive interviews = 4 60min sessions
- 7 detectives completed + were used
- over the next 7 months interviews were recorded = CI
- Post interviews = analysed by uni of california who were blind to this condition

Results:

7 trained detectives elicited 47% more info after training and 63% more than the untrained
- In terms of accuracy = lab research found no. of diff between CI and standard
- 85% of all statements being correct in all conditions
- time taken to interview = CI was longer // but not significant longer
