What does Clarity mean in the Locke and Latham theory?
that goals should be simple, clear and as specific as possible. Goals should be measurable and unambiguous. Its important that everyone understands what is expected. Goals should be developed within a time frame, so there is a clear ed fate for the goal to be achieved.
What should clarity not be within the Locke and Latham theory?
Goals should not be telling someone simply to ‘do your best’ or ‘improve your performance’. A vague goal such as ‘provide leadership to your work colleagues’ has very little value as a means of motivation, because it is not specific enough.
What does Performance Feedback refer to in the Locke and Latham theory?
a successful goal must give the chance of employee to seek feedback. Rate of feedback influenced by the timing. Offers the chance to acknowledge accomplishment, alter objective, make sure expectations are understood. Feedback can be formal or informal. Formal session necessary for longer more complex goals.
What does task complexity refer to in the Locke and Latham theory?
that setting clear, specific and challenging goals requires complex tasks to be carried out. Goals should be challenging, however the level of complexity shouldn’t be overwhelming. Additional training may be required to complete task, the aim is to motivate the employee contributing to objectives.
What does commitment refer to in relation to the Locke and Latham theory?
that in order to ensure employee will pursue the achievement of goals, that there should be commitment on behalf of the employee.
Strengths in relation to Locke and Latham theory?
- setting these goals will motivate employees, improve performance, and therefore contribute to business objectives.
- staff will perform at high standard, leading to higher rate of productivity
- better relationship between management and employees, collaborative working and feedback.
Weaknesses in relation to the Locke and Latham theory?
- individual employee goals may clash with each-other, or may not support the attainment of business objectives.
- employee may focus solely on their goals, and ignore other aspects of their job.
