Location Of Research Flashcards
Laboratory experiment
Lab: environment controlled by researcher, high control over extraneous variables with manipulation of IV
Field experiment
Controlled experiment conducted outside a lab with manipulation of the IV so casual relationships can still be demonstrated
Online experiment
Collecting data from individuals via a website/app/any other internet source.
Advantages and disadvantages of using a lab experiment
Advantages:
Easier to control confounding and extraneous variables making research easier to replicate and measure variables.
Disadvantages:
P’s may demonstrate artificial behaviour due to artificial environment, some behaviour cannot be conducted in a lab experiment due to the nature of the behaviour being researched.
Advantages and disadvantages of a field experiment
Advantages:
Minimises artificial nature of research resulting in P’s behaving more naturally, allows psychologists to examine behaviour in contexts difficult to a compare in a lab I.e. Locations outside of the lab.
Disadvantages:
More difficult to measure research variables and more difficult to control confounding variables. Harder to replicate due to difference in settings. Full complement of equipment cannot be used e.g. Hard to take brain scan machine everywhere.
Advantages and disadvantages of an online experiment
Advantages:
Access to large group of P’s and more diverse sample. Also cheap and fast. Data analysis is easier as P’s have already transcribed their responses.
Disadvantages:
Methods used are limited to questionnaires and surveys.
Ethical issues of valid consent and debriefing when appropriate are more difficult to deal with.
Quasi-experiment
Not a true experiment as IV is not deliberately manipulated, not possible to claim changes of the DV are caused by the IV.
State and define the two types of quasi-experiments
Natural experiments:
Difference experiments
