Localisation Of Function In The Brain Flashcards
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate localisation of function in the brain?

E
his research comes from a case study on a man who could und lang but lost the ability to speak, except for one word “Tan”
E
post mortems showed the damage was in one area in LH, now called brocas area
L
therefore, this shows the lang production is localised to one specific brain area as theory predicts
P
(Discussion - low pop val)
However, Brocas case study can be criticised to have low pop val
E
- this is bc it is a unique case study where brain damage may have affected the functionality of the brain
- so it may not be appr to gen findings on LOF to wider pop
E
- as some indv may be able to process lang in other areas of the brain
- e.g. some research has found that brocas area is not solely localised in LH but is found in the dominant hemisphere
L
therefore suggesting that more research is needed (with more diverse samples) before firm conclusions on the localisation of language areas are possible
P
(RTC by patient EB)
In addition, RTC - patient EB
E
he suffered from brain damage that resulted in his LH being removed, therefore his lang centres
E
- however, EB eventually managed to regain some of his lang ability
- this would not be possible if the lang centres were only localised to LH, as theory suggests
L
- this shows lang must be in more areas than just LH
- therefore suggesting a holistic exp of brain functioning is more appropiate than loc of function
