Hemispheric Lateralisation Flashcards
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate hemispheric lateralisation?
RTS by Sperry - split brain patients
RTC by EB - damage to LH
Discussion - low pop val
P
(RTS by Sperry)
RTS - Sperry - using split brain patients with a severed corpus collosum
E
- he found that when ppts were shown image of object to RVF, patient could name it verbally
- but when shown object to LVF, they couldnt name it but identify object by pointing
E
this supports that the brain is lateralised and hemispheres are responsible for diff functions such as LH being responsible for language abilities
L
therefore, split brain research supports the theory of hemispheric lateralisation
P
(RTC by patient EB)
Moreover, RTC - case study - patient EB
E
he suffered from brain damage that resulted in his LH being removed, therefore his lang centres
E
- however, EB eventually managed to regain some of his lang ability
- this wouldnt be possible if the brain was COMPLETELY LATERALISED
L
- this shows lang must be in more areas than just LH
- therefore ARGUING AGAINST LATERALISATION OF FUNCTION IN BRAIN
P
(Discussion - low pop val)
However, the case study of patient EB can be criticised to have low pop val
E
- this is bc it is a unique case study where brain damage may have affected the way in which the brain functions
- so it may not be appr to gen findings on the lat of function to wider pop
E
- as some indv may be able to processs lang in right hemisphere
- e.g. some research has found lang is not solely lateralised to LH but is found in dominant hemisphere
L
therefore suggesting more research is needed (with more diverse samples) before firm conclusions on the lateralisation of lang is possible
