Broca + wernicke
Broca
Found small area in left frontal lobe is responsible for speech production
Damage to Broca’s area causes broca’s aphasia
Broca’s aphasia
These individuals can understand speech but have slow speech that is not fluent e.g can’t say ‘a’ ‘the’ ‘and’
(Prepositions + conjunctions)
Broca’s most famous patient (aphasia) - ‘tan’ cause that was all he could say, but he could understand + communicate with gestures
Wernicke
Found small area in left temporal lobe is responsible for language comprehension
Damage to wernicke’s area causes wernicke’s aphasia
Wernicke’s aphasia
These individuals have problems understanding speech but no problems producing it
Words they produce r often nonsense words (neologisms) when speaking (find it difficult to find the right word)
Key characteristics Broca
Difficulty forming complete sentences
May get message across with simple words but leave out words like ‘is’ + ‘the’
Key characteristics wernicke
Grammatical but nonsensical speech
May sound fluent but is a string of meaningless words
May fail to realise they r saying the wrong words e.g might call a fork a gleeble
