Localisation A03 Flashcards
Support for localisation (petersen et al)
Brain scans
Found wernickes area wa active during a listening task + Broca’s area was active during a reading task
Suggesting that these areas of brain r associated with specific function
Against localisation - for holistic (lashley)
Against localisation of brain function
Lashley removed areas of cortex in rats that were learning a maze + found that this had no effect on their progress
Suggests more complex cog functions + whole brain involved
Lim of localisation
Dronkers et al re examined preserved brains of Broca’s patients ( TAN or leBorgne)
MRI found that other areas besides Broca’s area could have contributed to patents reduced speech abilities
Although lesions to Broca’s area alone can case temporary speech disruption of spoken language
Study suggests language + cognition r far more complicated +involves networks of breaking regions rather than being localised to specific area
Localisation support Sarah
Sarah Scott’s stroke meant there was brain tissue damage In Broca’s area (left frontal lobe)
Unable to speak properly as area is responsibl for speech production
