localisation Flashcards
define localisation
localisation is the theory coined by scientists like Broca and Wernicke that certain areas of the brain are specialised for specific functions eg Brocas area responsible for speech production
motor cortex
situated in the back of the frontal lobe
controls movement
somatasensory cortex
at the front of the parietal lobe on both hemispheres
regulates skin sensory information
what is the cross lateral nature of the brain
the left hemisphere coordinates the right side of the body and the right hemisphere coordinates the left side of the body
localisation evaluation strengths
evidence that cingulate gyrus is associated with the mental illness OCD- stems from neurosurgery evidence
isolated in surgery
30% success after 32 weeks
highlights that individual parts of the brain do have specific roles.
brain scan evidence perterson highlighted wernickes area was active during a listening task
identified that different parts of FC involved in episodic and semantic memory
PHINNEAS GAGE STUDY
localisation weaknesses
Lashley alternative evidence- removed varying amounts of cortex from rat brain and made them go through maze
found that no speceifc area was responsible for naviagtion
case study evidence such as phinneas gage is innacurate because only refers to a single case shouoldnt be generalised and trauma of his injury may have vaused his low moods not the injury itself or any damage to mood regulating parts of the brain such as the thalamus
