lateralisation Flashcards
(5 cards)
what is lateralisation
the concept that different hemispheres of the brain have different roles eg left associated with speech
visual cortex- contralateral and ipsilateral
contralateral= right visual field processed by left hemisphere left visual field processed by right hemisphere
ipsilateral- both eyes are the same
sperry split brain research
11 patients pf seizures who had split brain surgery and neuro-normative control group
projected image into left and right visual fields could either be the same or different images
if in left visual field they couldnt articulate what they were seeing because using right hemisphere and brocas area responsibke for production of speech is in the left
could let out emotional response eg giggle but no articulation
lateralisation evaluation
-idea that a person can be left or right brained is flawed
study with 1000 people under PET scan aged 7-29
none had dominance on either side
+used PET scan comparing visual processing- those looking at image holistically using right side those looking at a detail using left
split brain evaluation
Gazzinga found that split brain makes a difference because people perform better at certain tasks if they are split brain- they were fastest to determine odd one out
however hard to generalise because they had seizures and control group didnt therefore this was a confounding variable
