What is a LAN?
Local Area Network, its a network that connects computers in a small area such as a school
Define Intranet
It’s the organisation’s private network, e.g web pages relating to the organisation’s business
What does a Workstation refer to?
It refers to a desktop computer connected to the network.
Define Servers
It is powerful computers that provide resources
Define Clients
Computing devices that use network resources
What is the function of a NIC?
Network Interface Controller, it connects the computer to a cabled network, allows the computer to communicate with the network
What is a Switch?
It is a device that connects computers in a network with cables, to enable communication between them.
UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)
It looks like a telephone cable, It’s easy and cheap to install
Fibre optic
Uses light to send data and is therefore very fast
Advantages of WLAN compared to a LAN
- Installation is easier as there are no cables.
- Computers are easily moved as points are not fixed.
- Less chance of accidental damage (e.g people tripping over cables)
What does Network Software control?
It controls communication and security in a network
Advantages of LAN
- Software, hardware and internet access shared by users.
- Security and internet access controlled from a server.
- Software easily updated from one central location.
Disadvantages of LAN
- Can be expensive to install and maintain.
- Network security must be maintained.
- A network administrator is necessary.
Rules for choosing a password
- At least 8 characters long
- Mixture of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters
- Avoid using personal details
- Avoid keyboard patterns
What is the AUP?
Acceptable Use Policy, it outlines rights and responsibilities of network users
