It's all about ICT Flashcards
The role of ICT in the workplace:
ICT allows us to…
1) Work wherever we have access to a computer and the internet
2) Communicate more effectively with both employees and customers
3) Identify and adapt to changing trends - e.g in Sales
Information processing cycle
1) Input
2) Process
3) Output
What factors determine how ‘powerful’ a computer is?
1) The speed and performance of the CPU(s).
2) The amount and type of storage it has.
3) The size of the memory.
Three common settings one can use on a laptop computer in order to preserve battery life
1) Lower screen brightness .
2) Specifying that the computer should conserve
power by starting to ‘sleep’ or ‘hibernate’ when
it has not been used for a period of time.
3) Choosing a balance between power
consumption and performance.
Smartphones
Combine features and technologies of many seperated devices (convergence)
Touch screen for typed input
All smartphones have…
1) An operating system - examples include
Google Android and iOS.
2) One or two cameras.
3) Speakers and a microphone.
Definition of Servers and clients
Servers are computers that provide services or resources to other computers (clients) that are linked in the network.
Dedicated devices
They are designed to perform just one specific task such as Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs)
Computers
They are multi-purpose devices and can perform a wide variety of tasks
Protection measures for protecting your information
1) Password protect or encrypt data
2) Keep backups in secure off-site locations
3) Install ‘hidden’ security software
Hardware theft and protection
1) Use devices such as cable locks to anchor
equipment to a solid object.
2) Use lockable cabinets (with ventilation)
3) Make use of motion sensors that can detect
when a computer is moved.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
It can be used to protect a computer against power surges and spikes as well as power outages
How does a UPS work
A UPS is connected to the mains (to charge the batteries continuously), and will immediately provide power to the computer(s) connected to it as soon as the main power fails. This gives you time to save your work and shut down your computer.
Phablets
Smartphones with screen sizes bigger than 5”
