lobes of the brain Flashcards
memorise and understand
functions of the cerebral cortex
initiates plans and controls voluntary body movements
frontal lobe function
higher order functions (planning, problem solving and reasoning), impulse control and voluntary movements
frontal lobe localisation
Broca’s area, pre frontal cortex, primary motor cortex
temporal lobe function
language and auditory processes
temporal lobe localisation
Wernickes area, primary auditory cortex
parietal lobe function
bodily sensation (touch, temp, pressure) (P for physical)
parietal lobe localisation
primary sensory cortex
occipital lobe function
visual perception and visual processing
occipital lobe localisation
primary visual cortex
Broca’s area function
controls the mine muscles repsonsible for clear speech production such as cheeks, lips, tongue and jaw as well as muscles such as your larynx and pharlynx
impairment caused when Broca’s area is damaged
non fluent aphasia
impairment in the ability to produce articulate speech
Werneck’s area
responsible for the understanding of language and the production of meaningful speech
impairment caused when Werneck area is damaged
fluent aphasia
impairment in the ability to understand language and produce meaningful speech
pre frontal cortex
the front layer of the frontal lobes that coorindates functions such as the ability to predict the consequences of behaviours as well as the ability to recognise and regulate emotion
primary sensory cortex
a strip of cerebral cortex running through the parietal lobe that registers and processes sensory information
