What is it?
acute lower respiratory tract infection with fever
What is community acquired pneumonia?
pneumonia contracted by someone who has had little contact with healthcare system
What organism is mainly responsible for community acquired pneumonia?
streptococcus pneumoniae
What is hospital acquired pneumonia?
pneumonia contracted by a patient in hospital at least for 48-72hrs after being admitted.
What usually caused HAP? (2)
- Gram negative enetrobacteria
- s.aureus
What is aspiration pneumonia?
- aspiration of gastric contents causing pneumonia
What conditions/state increase your risk of aspiration pneumonia? (5)
- stroke
- myasthenia gravis
- decreased consciousness
- oesophageal disease
- poor dental hygiene
What causes immunocompromised pneumonia?
pneumocystis jiroveci
What are the characteristic symptoms of immunocompromised pneumonia? (3)
- high fever
- breathlessness
- cough

- rigors
- malaise
- anorexia
- dyspnoea
- cough
- purluent sputum
- haemoptysis
- pleuritic pain
What are the signs? (11)
- pyrexia
- cyanosis
- confusion
- tachypnoea
- hypotension
- decreased expansion
- dull percussion note
- increased tactile fremitus
- increased vocal ressonace
- bronchial breathing
- pleural rub
