What is meant by the term safeguarding?
Ensuring the safety of all participants whilst in your care
Define a vulnerbale adult?
Define who a vunerbale adult is?
someone over 18 who needs care services due to illness diease or diability, they are unable to take care of themselves.
What is the meaning/responsibility of safeguarding?
- protection from maltreatment
- preventing impairment of health
- ensuring provision of safe and effective care
How to protect staff and yourself from allegations of abuse?
- ensure proper staffing ratios
- avoid 1:1 situations
What are the 2 safeguarding regulations?
- The mental capacity act 2005
- The children act 1989/2004
What are the 6 safeguarding requirments?
- Designated safeguard lead
- Arrangemnts to share info
- Clear safeguarding policies

What is a safeguarding policy?
its a statment that makes it clear what an organsation is doing to keep children safe
What should a safeguarding policy include?
- Statement on commitment to protecting ALL children
- What they will do
- List of supporting procedures
4 types of abuse?
- physical
- emotional
- neglect
- sexual
Signs of physical abuse?
- recurrent injuries
- refusal to undress for sport
Examples of emotional abuse?
- bullying
- pressure
- name calling
Signs of emotional abuse?
- introverted
- speech impediments
- overly aggressive
Examples of neglect?
- unsafe equipment
- witholding medication
- ignoring medical needs
SIgns of neglect?
- poor hygiene
- lack of energy
Signs of sexual abuse?
- mood swings
- pregnancy
- self harm
How to deal with suspected abuse?
- follow safeguarding procedures
- talk to the child or vulnerbale adult
- talk to others who know them
- report to authorities
- record amd store details - DPA
- keep child in safe environement
- dont contact absuer
What does the Child protection in sport unit do?
- To help minimise the risk to young people during activities
- To provide expert advice about safeguarding
- To provide sport-specific training/resources/guidance/ templates
- Enable sports organisations to lead the way in keeping children safe from harm
What do social services do?
1 Safeguard children and support families
2 Providing social workers (to give appropriate warnings/information about individuals)
3 To be a point of contact to deal with for child protection issues
4 Work with police to keep children safe
What do NGBs do?
1 To provide info about the specific child protection issues for the particular NGB
2 To make people aware of the individual differences for a particular activity. E.g. the guidelines for swimming are different to other activities
3 To help organisations to stay up-to-date with regulatory changes for safeguarding
4. Provide training/ safeguarding policies/ templates
What does NHS do?
Investigate/treat injuries or illnesses which result from safeguarding issues
Provide or refer to specialist help (e.g. counselling)
What can the police do?
Investigate criminality/offences linked to safeguarding issues
Provide or refer to specialist help (e.g. counselling)
What do teachers do?
Investigate matters relating to the school
Provide support/counselling
Refer to the authorities/ police/ social services
