Q

What do the impacts of discriminatory practises on individuals include?

A

-Disempowerment: This is where an individual has, or feels they have, a lack of control over their life; they feel unwanted and unimportant, causing them to disengage with life. It can lead to an individual just accepting whatever happens in order to avoid conflict and completely losing independence.
-Low self- esteem and low- self confidence: An individual may feel worthless and have their self- confidence destroyed as a result of discrimination.
-Poor health and wellbeing: An individual’s general health might deteriorate. Physical injuries such as bruising, cuts or broken bones may result from physical abuse or neglect. Medication may not be given on time or not at all so the condition or illness worsens.
-Unfair treatment: Individuals may not receive the care that they are entitled to and so have to struggle to manage their daily lives, or they may not achieve their potential because they are not being given the support they should be receiving. They may feel marginalised or excluded from participating in things due to discrimination making them feel they are not wanted.
-Effects on mental health: Examples include depression, anxiety, self- harming or developing an eating disorder, behaviour changes such as aggression, becoming withdrawn and socially isolated.
