Abuse
A negative or harmful way of behaving towards another individual/group
Sexual abuse Financial abuse Physical abuse Emotional abuse Verbal abuse
Direct discrimination
Intentionally treating an individual unfairly/ putting them at a disadvantage based on their differences
Indirect discrimination
When a policy, practice or rule applies to everyone but puts an individual or certain group at a disadvantage/is detrimental
Prejudice
A negative attitude towards an individual/group often based on a ill-formed personal opinion about 1 of the 9 protected characteristics
Stereotyping
Where offensive and exaggerated generalisations are made about a specific group of people
Labelling
Negative approach that identifies people as members of groups with the assumption that they are ‘all the same’
Bullying
Involves threatening, intimidating, humiliating or frightening others. It is a repeated behaviour with the intent of causing physical/psychological harm
Individuals affected by discriminatory practice
Almost anyone who uses/provides health, social care or child care service can be affected.
E.g. individuals who require care and support like patients, older adults, people with physical and sensory disabilities, children with autism, babies, individuals who have dementia
Family, friends and relatives who use care services
Practitioners like nurses, GPs, teachers etc
Impacts of discriminatory practice on individuals
Disempowerment - feeling lack of control over their life/unwanted/unimportant
Low self-esteem
Low self-confidence
Feeling worthless
Poor health and wellbeing
Unfair treatment - individuals may not receive the care that they are entitled to
